History And Significance of Bhai Dooj Festival
According to a legend, on this very day, Lord Krishna had returned home after slaying the demon Narakasura. He goes to his loving sister Subhadra who welcomes him home with the holy Diya, fragrant flowers, and sweet and puts the holy vermillion mark on her brother’s forehead; and thus the festival was born.
Also, some say that the lord of Death, Yamaraj visited his sister Yami or Yamuna, who greets her brother with a tilak, the auspicious mark on his forehead, and prays for his health and well-being. This is why it is said that anyone who receives a tilak from their sister on this very day shall not be hurled to hell. Fun fact, this festival is also called Yama-Dwitiya, i.e. the second day after the new moon.
