Chhath Puja Celebrations 2023
Chhath puja is one of the most awaited festivals in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and in many other parts of India.
Chhath puja is a festival that is dedicated to the worship of God Suryadev(Sun God). Devotees offer Arghya to Surya Dev on the last day of the festival. It is also considered as Mahaparva.

Why Chhath Puja is Celebrated? (छठ पूजा क्यों मनाई जाती है)
The word Chhath refers to the sixth day of the lunar fortnight of the Kartik month (on the Shashti Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month).
Chhath puja is, therefore, celebrated 6th day after Diwali.
Sun is considered to be bestowing the bounties of life and energy on Earth. He is worshipped for curing all diseases and promoting the longevity of all human life.
In Chhath Vrat, along with Surya we also worshipped the Chhathi Maiya (Sister of Surya) and they asked to be the groom to protect their children.
Chhath Puja History
It is believed that this festival is started from the Dwapara Yuga i.e. Ramayana period. The fast (Chhath Vrat) was performed by the Draupadi the wife of the Pandavas, during their years in exile. To solve her problems and help the Pandavas regain their kingdom in gambling.
It is believed that Chhath puja vrat katha is associated with King Priyavrat and his wife Malini.
Chhath Puja Vrat Katha
According to Indian mythology, a king named Priyavrat has no child.
One day, in a desire to have the children, he performed a Sonishti Yajna by Maharishi Kashyap. As a result of this yajna, the queen becomes pregnant. But in spit of happiness to come in their life – after nine-month, the queen received a dead son.
Priyavrat felt very bad and decided to commit suicide. But when the Priyavrat tried to do that Goddess Shashti Dev appeared before him.
Goddess Shashti Dev told the king, I give people the good fortune of the son, complete all the desires of the person who worships me with the true sentiment. If you worship me, I will give you the son’s jewel. Impressed by the words of the goddess, the king obeyed her.
On the day of Kartik Shukla, king Priyavrat and his wife Malini worshipped Chhathi Maiya. As a result of this worship, Malini is blessed with a beautiful son.
From then onward this holy festival is celebrated in the Northern part of India.
The four-day long festivities ( ‘Nahay Khay’, ‘Kharna’, ‘Shaam Ki Arghya’, and ‘Paran’) commenced on 17th November 2023 Friday / शुक्रवार and concluded on 20th November 2023 Monday / सोमवार.

Chhath Puja Day 2: Lohanda and Kharna (Saturday, 18 November 2023)

Chhath Puja Day 4: Usha Argh and Paran (Monday, 20 November 2023)

Chhath Puja Day 1: Nahay-Khay
The first day is called “Nahai Khay” which means to bath and eat. The Chatti (Vrati Women) clean all the fruits and grains and dry them in the sunlight. After the women takes a bath takes the satvik food with his family members.
Kaddu Bhaat along with Channa dal is a common preparation on this day and it is cooked by using mud and wood/Goitha (a dry cow dung) over a mud Chula(stove). After worship, all the observers are eaten only once on a day. Vrati starts in the mid-noon afternoon food. The waterless-fast which is broken only the next day evening while observing ‘Kharna’ the second day of Chhath Puja.
Chhath Puja Day 2: Lohanda and Kharna
On the second day also known as “Kharna”, devotees observe a fast the starting purifying their body and mind. In the evening, they offer puja to Surya after which they end their fast.
They offer Sugarcane Juice or Jaggery Rice or Jaggery Kheer, Puris, and Fruits in the puja.
The third day is marked by elaborate evening prayers Chhath Puja Rituals called the Sandhya Arghya. In Sandhya Arghya, devotees take a dip in the river or a Pokhara (self-made small pool), etc.
And worship the Surya Dev and Chhathi Maiya for there family well being and prosperity in there life. Songs of Chhathi Maiya also sung by folks(Mainly by Women).

Chhath Puja Day 4: Suryodaya/Usha Argh and Paran
The fourth day/last day is considered to be the most auspicious day of the Chhath puja.
As devotees gather around the riverbank/ghats before the sunrise and offer prayers to the morning sun in the “Bihaniya Arghya” “Bhorwa Arghya” (morning offerings).
Chhathi Maiya Prasad(Thekua) is shared with neighbors and relatives after reaching home. Marks the end of Paran.
